Consolidation of the Healthcare Industry is resulting in
the need to coordinate electrical maintenance and planning for
groups of hospitals as well as individual facilities. In addition,
space limitations, budget reductions for maintenance and changes in
hospital layout (more outpatient surgery, addition of family
sleeping space near patient, greater reliance on hospital admission
from emergency room) are overstressing the existing infrastructure.
This can result in reduced equipment life and greater likelihood of
unexpected failure. Failure of electrical equipment results in the
interruption of healthcare services.
The increased usage of electronic equipment means more non-linear
loads connected to distribution systems that may have been designed
for linear loads. In general, while the quality of the power
supplied by the utility has improved or remained the same, today's
electronic equipment requires a much higher level of power quality.
Continuous, reliable power is needed to maintain computers that
control everything from diagnostic equipment to patient and
insurance records. K-factor transformers, oversized neutrals and
active filters are examples of products that were developed to
address this new reality.
